The story is based on the book: A Letter For Hilda By Kelvin Rush. The play is set in July 1976. Eric had been keeping a dark secret from his wife Hilda for over twenty years. When he was diagnosed with terminal cancer, he decided to get it all off his chest and come clean. He wrote Hilda a letter, but insisted it shouldn’t be opened until the third anniversary of his death. The contents of the letter would leave Hilda in a state of shock and bewilderment.
Eric was convinced he’d witnessed a murder. Two local men got into a brutal fight in the Horse and Dragon car park, and one of the men hadn’t been seen since. There were lots of rumours flying around, and although an arrest was made, the suspect was released without charge. Eric was desperate to solve the mystery and asked Hilda, and grandson Robbie, for their help. Unfortunately Eric died without ever knowing the truth. Then mysteriously, Hilda also died. It was then left to Robbie to see if he could solve the brutal car park murder, once and for all.
Every year on July 16th at midnight, the ghost of Ivy Fletcher would jump off the top of Keppel’s Column and then disappear into thin air, just before she hit the ground. 9-year-old Ivy had been murdered on July 17th 1934. She’d been sexually assaulted and strangled, and her half-naked body had been dumped at the side of the Column. No one was ever charged with her murder, but most of the locals had their suspicions, and one name in particular was on everyone’s lips.
