The musical is set in 1974, and is based around the Spence family. They’re a typical working class family, living on a council estate in the north of England. We follow a week in the life of 11-year-old Jimmy Spence. Jimmy is in the midst of puberty, and embarks on a journey of self discovery, as he struggles to come to terms with the emotional upheaval in his young life. To make things even more confusing, he falls in love with Julie Richardson, a girl from his school. Unfortunately for Jimmy, the school bully, Jack Russell, also has affections for Julie, and he orders Jimmy to stay away from her, or else.
Jimmy dreams of kissing Julie, but there’s a problem: He’s never kissed a girl before, or had a girlfriend. He turns to his best mate Scotty for help. Scotty tries to teach Jimmy how to kiss, but it’s not as straight forward as he thinks. When Scotty arranges for Jimmy to meet Julie, at Barkers Park, Jimmy is absolutely petrified. Despite his reservations, he agrees to the meeting. But first he needs to confront Jack Russell. There’s a dramatic showdown, as Jimmy and Jack come face to face. It’s a fight to the end for both boys, who desperately want to capture Julie’s heart.
